For a slightly off-the-beaten-path ski experience, try Vails backcountry hut-to-hut skiing. The 10th Mountain Division Hut Association was formed in 1980 to build a backcountry ski hut system in the mountains of Colorado between Aspen, Leadville and Vail.
Now, you can reserve the huts for a fee as a takeoff for day adventures or to ski from hut to hut. These shelters are within White River and San Isabel national forests so stunning vistas are guaranteed. This trip wont be for everyone, however; the Forest Service advises that the trails require skiers to have at least intermediate ability. The Hut Association also requires that someone in each group be proficient in backcountry skills such as avalanche awareness and compass reading.
Huts sleep 16 and include woodburning stoves, propane burners, cooking and eating utensils, kitchen supplies, mattresses and pillows.
For information, call the Hut Association, 970/925-5775.
